Cancer Survivors Day

HADDAM — The Middlesex Hospital Cancer Center held its annual Survivors Day Celebration Sunday at The Riverhouse of Goodspeed Station. The event recognized the courage and strength that cancer survivors exhibit every day.

“Today is about celebrating life,” said Justin Drew, the Cancer Center’s, director to the crowd of cancer survivors and their caregivers.

In addition to enjoying brunch and socializing, those in attendance heard inspirational messages from several individuals, including Dr. Stacy Charat, a California-based primary care physician and cancer survivor.

Charat, who was 12 and living in East Hampton when she was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, was treated at Middlesex Hospital, and she shared her story Sunday, telling the crowd about how the experience impacted her life. She spoke of going to school during cancer treatment; the support of her family; and about her experience as a camper and counselor at The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, a medically-supervised summer camp for children with serious illnesses. She also spoke about how having cancer made her a stronger person who is better equipped to care for others.

“I think we’ve been given a very special perspective,” Charat said. “I survived without devastating consequences, and I do not take that for granted.”

At the Survivors Day Celebration, the Cancer Center also presented two awards. The Recognition Award was given to the Westbrook Elks Club for their ongoing support. Every year, the club holds Beach Jam, a fundraiser that helps breast cancer patients in need. Cheryl Terrio received the Deb Campagna Survivorship Award for giving back to the Cancer Center.
