MIDDLETOWN - Middlesex Hospital launched its Women’s Wellness Fund Wednesday with “STRAIGHT TALK: From Sex to Stress and Everything in Between.”

An invitation to conversations about women’s health is one of the perks of becoming a member of the Women’s Wellness Fund, which is a way to support women’s health awareness, breast cancer early detection through 3D mammography and healthy mothers and babies. Fund members will be invited to semi-annual women’s health talks and are encouraged to serve as advocates and ambassadors for women’s health.

“This fund harnesses the power of women’s philanthropy to make an impact on women’s health in our community,” says Sarah Moore, the Hospital’s director of development. “Women tend to make the majority of healthcare decisions for their loved ones, and this fund will bring high quality health information to more women in our community.”

Wednesday’s event was held at The River House at Goodspeed Station in Haddam and included a light dinner and a formal program for the more than 150 people in attendance. Anita Ford-Saunders, of AFS Communication, moderated the conversation. Panelists included Dr. Anne Bingham, Crescent Street OB/GYN; Dr. Patrice Janell Holmes, a Middlesex Hospital psychiatrist; and Dr. Rachel Lovins, chair of the Hospital’s Department of Medicine. The trio answered several questions on a variety of topics, including stress, sex and aging.

“Bringing women together to get their health questions answered and to meet with doctors in a social setting is so meaningful,” says Sally Mayer, of Essex, a member of the planning committee who helped create the Fund and planned the launch event.

As a mother and grandmother, Mayer says she is interested in and concerned about women’s health not only for herself but for her children’s and grandchildren’s generation. “I want to make sure everything is in place for them,” she says. “That is why supporting Middlesex Hospital and the Women’s Wellness Fund is so important to me.”

One hundred percent of all donations to the Women’s Wellness Fund will support priority women’s health projects selected each year by Hospital staff and the fund’s steering committee. Projects may focus on anything from pregnancy and birth to heart health to insomnia and healthy living.

In the coming years, there will be several pressing issues that impact women, many of which may be addressed at future women’s health talks. Lifestyle diseases, such as those associated with the foods we eat, and equity and health disparities were mentioned as important issues during Wednesday’s event.
