Broken thumbs and fingers, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis are some of the most common reasons for hand injury, pain, and swelling.

Our online Learning Center has up-to-date, information about these and other conditions of the hand. Click below to learn more about each condition.

Our orthopedic surgery team specializes in a variety of diagnostic procedures designed to carefully analyze your hand injury or condition and determine the best course of action.

You may be a good candidate for hand surgery if non-surgical treatments and medications are not effective in treating your condition, or if these methods stop working for you.

Surgery may be an important part of the treatment for a fractured hand. This will depend on the location of your fracture and the amount of movement between the broken fragments of bone.

If your break is severe, your bones may need extra stabilization during the early stages of healing. Your surgeon can use different techniques to provide this support:

  • External fixation: Support from outside the body, using pins in the bone that are held in place by an external device
  • Internal fixation: Support from inside the body, using wire, pins, plates, and screws

Whenever possible, your orthopedic surgeon will try to preserve or reconstruct your joint without the use of outside materials or fusion techniques.

Joint fusion is a procedure that provides pain relief, but it stops joint motion. In other words, after this operation, your joint no longer moves. However, because the damaged joint surfaces are gone, they cannot cause symptoms.

Joint fusion is used when preservation and reconstruction is no longer possible.

Joint replacement surgery is performed to provide pain relief and functional joint motion.

Over the last few years, there have been significant improvements in joint replacements for the hand and wrist. New materials allow patients to experience better function after surgery, and the joint can last for a longer time.
