Vaginal Prolapse

Women may experience vaginal prolapse after childbirth or as they age. Fortunately, there are treatment options available.

What is vaginal prolapse?

Vaginal prolapse occurs if the vagina is stretched or misplaced into/by other organs in the body. The bladder, rectum, and uterus can all be impacted by vaginal prolapse.

Vaginal prolapse is most common in women who have given birth multiple times and are aging. Menopause can also increase your risk of vaginal prolapse.

Some women have no symptoms at all, while others experience discomfort in their pelvis or low back. Some women experience the frequent urge to urinate or have stress incontinence.

Posterior Vaginal Prolapse (Rectocele)

Anterior Vaginal Prolapse (Cystocele)

What are some of the treatment options?

Vaginal prolapse can be treated to improve your symptoms. Options may include, but are not limited to:

  • Physical rehabilitation and pelvic muscle exercises
  • Devices to help hold the vagina in place
  • Surgery

Your doctor will work with you to determine the best option for your specific condition and other health concerns.
