Osteoarthritis of the spine usually happens in the neck or lower back.

Overview

Osteoarthritis is a type of arthritis that happens when the protective cartilage that cushions the ends of bones wears down over time. Degenerative disk disease refers to osteoarthritis of the spine. With age, the soft disks cushioning the spine dry out and shrink. This most commonly happens in the neck or lower back.

Symptoms

Treatment can include exercise, medicines and physical therapy. Sometimes, surgery may be needed.
