Celebrating Our Survivors

Survivors Day

CROMWELL — It takes courage, strength and resilience to battle and survive cancer and to face any personal struggles that come with such a diagnosis. As a result, it is important to recognize cancer survivors, and Middlesex Hospital Cancer Center does so annually at its Survivors Day Celebration.

“Today is all about you,” said Vincent G. Capece, Jr. “We’re here to support you even after your treatment.”

This year’s event was held June 3 at The Red Lion in Cromwell. In addition to enjoying a delicious brunch, attendees heard from several inspiring speakers, including Elizabeth VanWazer, a cancer survivor and World War II veteran from Essex, and keynote speaker Monette Massard, a cancer survivor and author who now lives in Atlanta, Georgia.

VanWazer has survived cancer three times and continues to forge ahead with the help of her “watchdog” physicians at Middlesex Hospital. Her best advice: “Do not give up.”

Massard, who was diagnosed with breast cancer twice, shared similar thoughts. She spoke in detail of her experiences and how her battle with cancer changed her.

“Stand strong in who you are,” Massard said. “Never deny who you are.”

Middlesex Hospital Cancer Center is accredited by several leading organizations and has locations in Middletown and Westbrook. It uses the latest technology to diagnose and treat patients with various types of cancer, including breast cancer, colorectal cancer, gynecological cancer, lung cancer, prostate cancer, bladder cancer, head and neck cancer and skin cancer. Services include surgical oncology, medical oncology, radiation therapy, infusion, genetic counseling integrative therapy and survivorship services.
