Hospital Deploys Germ Killing Device

February 1, 2016

The newest member of Middlesex Hospital’s infection prevention team is Tru-D, a 5-foot-5 device that uses ultraviolet light to pulverize any germs in its path.

Tru-D stands for Total Room Ultraviolet Disinfection. It is a mobile, automated disinfection system that cleans using ultraviolet light, to provide an additional layer of protection to the Hospital’s already robust array of infection prevention methods.

After a Hospital staff member thoroughly cleans a room using traditional methods, the Tru-D device can be brought in to

disinfect even further. The mechanism is controlled remotely from outside the room and uses lightreflected back to itssensors to accurately determine the time needed to eliminate infectious germs fromcontaminated surfaces, before automatically shutting down and alerting the operator that disinfection is complete.

Middlesex Hospital currently has three mobile disinfection units, two of which are being used in the Operating Room and the other ready to be deployed as needed to areas with high infection risk.
