Exercising and Age
It’s important to exercise at any age, but the benefits are especially important for older adults.
Regular exercise has physical, mental and emotional health benefits, and that’s why One MacDonough Place offers exercise classes, such as Tai Chi, chair Zumba and strength and conditioning, six days a week.
With just 30 minutes of physical activity at least five days a week, older adults can:
- Reduce their risk of falling by improving strength, balance, coordination and flexibility
- Reduce their risk of having a stroke or heart attack
- Achieve better bone density, which may decrease the risk of osteoporosis
- Sleep better
- Alleviate symptoms of depression
- Reduce their risk of developing dementia
- Achieve a better quality of life
- Prevent or delay diseases like hypertension or diabetes
- Increase socialization
- Increase mobility
Exercise is an important component of healthy aging that includes a good diet, exercise, brain health, socialization and engagement in life. An assisted living community, such as One MacDonough Place, can help older adults by providing good nutrition, exercise opportunities and programs for the mind, body and spirit. These communities can also create strong friendships through the social support of residents and staff.
One final note: When starting a new exercise program, it’s always important to talk to your physician.
