Middlesex Among Top 2 Percent of U.S. Hospitals

Press Release, February 11, 2020
Middlesex Hospital

MIDDLETOWN — Middlesex Hospital, a part of Middlesex Health, has earned the Healthgrades 2020 America’s 100 Best Hospitals Award and is the only hospital in Connecticut to receive such an honor. The distinction places Middlesex in the top 2 percent of nearly 4,500 hospitals assessed nationwide for its consistent, year-over-year superior clinical performance as measured by Healthgrades, a resource that connects consumers, physicians and health systems.

“Middlesex Hospital is a very special place,” says President and CEO Vincent G. Capece, Jr. “We put our patients first and provide the highest quality care to our community. We do this consistently, and this Healthgrades honor recognizes that. We are very proud to be one of America’s best hospitals.”

From 2016 through 2018, patients treated in hospitals achieving the award had, on average, less complications than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the award.

Middlesex is the recipient of multiple Healthgrades awards. It was named one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Stroke Care by Healthgrades in 2020; one of the 100 Best Hospitals for Pulmonary Care five years in a row; one of the 100 Best Hospitals for Critical Care for two years in a row; and a Healthgrades Gastrointestinal Care Excellence Award recipient three years in a row.

Recipients of the Healthgrades America’s 100 Best Hospitals Award stand out among the rest for overall clinical excellence across a broad spectrum of care. During the 2020 study period (2016 through 2018), these hospitals showed superior performance in clinical outcomes for patients in the Medicare population across 21 of 32 most common inpatient conditions and procedures — as measured by objective performance data, such as risk-adjusted mortality and in-hospital complications.
