FAQs for Families

From invitations to our afternoon socials to a personal escort to the dining room and introductions to other residents at the table, we make it a point to personally help new residents feel at home within the One MacDonough community. Each Department will do everything they can to make joining our assisted living community as easy and as comfortable as possible.

The menus at One MacDonough Place have been reviewed by the Director of Dining Services for their nutritional values. Our nursing staff and chefs work together with family and physicians to provide the best possible diet to meet residents' needs.

We have three Registered Nurses (RN) on staff each weekday and one RN on the weekends. An RN is on call 24 hours a day. Our Personal Care Attendants (PCAs) are certified by the State of Connecticut and provide 24-hour staffing each day. We have access to the services of Middlesex Health - including Middlesex Hospital and a range of specialists and therapists. All of our chefs are safe-serve certified so you are assured what we serve is fresh and handled according to all safety guidelines.

Middlesex Health has more than 400 physicians with specialties in many fields, including gerontology. Some physicians, physician assistants, and other healthcare providers - including a podiatrist and massage therapist - visit One MacDonough Place to make access to care easier for our residents, especially during winter.

Dr. Millicent Malcolm, DNP, GNP-BC, APRN is a gerontologist who holds regular office hours at One MacDonough to serve residents in the convenience of their own home. However, you may choose any physician, in or out of our system, as your medical needs arise.

There is an array of services available to residents of One MacDonough. As part of Middlesex Health, we have a strong emphasis on quality with unsurpassed resources and benefits available to residents and families. Our continuum includes laboratory services, social services, physical therapy, homecare services, a comfort care program, and much more.

In addition to our regularly scheduled shopping trips, we have weekly excursions to museums, shoreline attractions, lunches, and special events such as parades, fairs and concerts. Our Program Director will meet with each resident to discuss and plan activities around his or her interests.

Also, as part of our assisted living services, we offer a Personal Errand Service to all residents. Each afternoon, we host a social hour with complimentary beverages and hors d'oeuvres. Evenings bring the chance to gather for a movie shown in our community room, or residents may choose to kick back and relax in their own apartments to watch the movie on our cable TV station.

Our Program Director and staff are joined by a wonderful team of volunteers who bring a dimension of care and love to our residents that money could not buy. They enjoy visiting, playing cards, Scrabble, Dominos, gardening, and sharing in other activities with residents.

One MacDonough Place is located in the heart of Middletown, Connecticut, within walking distance to Main Street. Main Street is home to more than 40 restaurants offering cuisine from around the world — a hit with residents and visitors alike. The Inn at Middletown, a restored historical building with first class amenities, and the cultural opportunities of Wesleyan University and the Green Street Arts Center are also close by.

Since this is a resident's home, their guests may visit anytime, day or night. Our doors are open while the receptionist is on duty from 8:30 am until 8:00 pm daily. During off-hours, simply pick up the phone in the foyer and a personal care attendant will come to open the door for you.

Middlesex Health Security walks our campus throughout the evening hours to provide extra security for our residents and staff. Additionally, we have a new internal and external security system to monitor our community for safety.

Each pet is evaluated on a case-by-case basis. There must be a plan in place to provide for their care. We always encourage families and friends with pets to bring them for visits. Please note that pets are not permitted to roam freely in our public or common areas.

In Connecticut, each licensed assisted living community undergoes an extensive survey every two years to assure that facilities adhere to the regulations and that each resident is provided with a high level of service. Additionally, One MacDonough has a quality assurance committee comprised of members of Middlesex Hospital’s medical staff and Home Health Care staff. We benchmark our assisted living community with other communities in our annual satisfaction survey to strive for the highest possible service levels for residents.
