Middlesex Hospital Cancer Center Enhances Patient Education

Press Release, April 3, 2017

MIDDLETOWN — The Middlesex Hospital Cancer Center is partnering with New York City-based PadInMotion to provide its patients with valuable health information via tablet device.

Effectively educating patients about how radiation therapy works and what to expect is critical to reducing fear and improving the patient experience. In addition, educating patients about their medical conditions, healthy living and services at the Cancer Center, such as integrative medicine, has always been very important. With the increased reliance on technology, using customized tablets to share this information makes sense and helps to increase patient engagement.

The Cancer Center began using the tablets, loaded with educational videos, health tips and feedback forms and other Hospital information, today, and all staff members have been shown how to use them.

“We are always looking for new and innovative ways to educate our patients,” says Cancer Center Director Justin Drew. “This technology allows us to effectively educate our patients by making resources easily accessible in a modern way.”

Patients will be using the new tablets while waiting for radiation oncology services. The devices are easy to use, and any information on them will comply with HIPAA, the federal law that protects patient privacy and security. As patients begin to use the tablets, they will be asked to provide feedback, and the content can be updated to best meet patient needs.

Patients will also be encouraged to download an app on their personal tablet or smartphone. This will allow them to continue to benefit from the content found on the tablets when at home.

This new service is free to all radiation oncology patients at the Cancer Center, as well as any patient receiving integrative medicine therapies, and the Cancer Center looks forward to working with PadInMotion as it pilots this new platform.

“After months of planning, we are very excited to have the resources we need right at our fingertips,” Drew says.
