“It has been a pleasure to join a strong, established program here to treat lung cancer. Lung cancer is the No. 1 cancer killer of both men and women. It also has a poor five-year survival rate. Fortunately, with the use of low-dose CT scanning for lung cancer, we have been able to diagnose the disease in its earliest stages for many of our patients, follow them regularly, and greatly improve outcomes for these patients.”

Dr. McKelvey also pointed out the benefits of the team approach to lung cancer treatment provided by the program.

“The various disciplines work together to develop the best treatment plan for patients. I work closely with other highly trained surgeons here at Middlesex Hospital to perform the appropriate type of surgery for each of our patients. Clinical professionals share their opinions and expertise through regular lung tumor conferences. In addition, the lung nurse navigator plays a pivotal role in guiding patients through the process. The complementary medicine program offered by the Cancer Center is also a great benefit for patients. It is a pleasure for me to be part of this collaborative and dedicated team, to provide the best care possible for our patients.”
