COVID-19 Testing - Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, Middlesex Health Urgent Care offers COVID-19 testing. While an appointment is encouraged, one is not required.

Middlesex Health Urgent Care administers PCR molecular tests. A COVID-19 PCR molecular test uses a nasal or nasopharyngeal swab, and this test is processed by Middlesex Health’s Laboratory. PCR testing is offered at Middlesex Health Urgent Care’s offices in both Middletown and Old Saybrook seven days a week. Patients can expect their results in 24 to 48 hours.

COVID-19 testing is available to:

  • Individuals who have symptoms of COVID-19. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that anyone with any signs or symptoms of COVID-19 get tested, regardless of vaccination status or prior infection.

  • Those who have been exposed to someone who tested positive for COVID-19. If you have been in close contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19, you should get tested three to five days after you were with them. (Note: Close contact means that you were within 6 feet of the person for 15 minutes or more during a 24-hour period.)

  • Individuals who are not vaccinated, but who have participated in activities that put them at higher risk for COVID-19 because they cannot maintain appropriate social distance. Activities that may put you at higher risk include traveling, attending large social or mass gatherings and being in crowded or poorly-ventilated indoor settings.

  • Individuals who have been referred for testing by a healthcare provider

  • Asymptomatic individuals who are screened, and it is determined that they need mandatory testing for travel, school or their job

Patients who get tested for COVID-19 at Middlesex Health Urgent Care will be notified of their results through their MyChart accounts. If you do not have a MyChart account, you can learn more and create one here

If your COVID-19 test result is positive, you will be contacted by phone during normal business hours.

Middlesex Health Urgent Care evaluates each patient individually. While urgent care locations provide drive-up COVID-19 testing, they also evaluate patients in person and through telehealth visits to ensure that all patients feel comfortable while getting the care they need.

Upon arrival, you should park in the designated drive-up testing parking spaces and call your Urgent Care office from your car. You will then speak with a staff member to complete your registration and get instructions on how to proceed.

A Middlesex Health Urgent Care staff member may come to your car to evaluate you and administer your COVID-19 test, if needed, unless you are instructed to enter the urgent care office. Please keep your mask on at all times and maintain your social distance as you interact with staff.

Middlesex Health Urgent Care will do its best to evaluate you as quickly as possible. Your patience is appreciated if you experience longer than normal wait times.

Middlesex Health Urgent Care locations are taking extra precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Please know that staff are screened each day for COVID-19 symptoms, and all Middlesex Health employees are required to get vaccinated against COVID-19 unless they are granted an exemption or deferral.

In addition, Middlesex Health Urgent Care:

  • Screens by phone for COVID-19 or flu symptoms and also screens for symptoms at its doors

  • Enhanced cleaning protocols based on CDC recommendations. Each room is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected after each use.

  • Offers drive-up COVID-19 testing

  • Has dedicated entrances and isolated areas for patients who have COVID-19 symptoms. This reduces the chances of COVID-19 exposure to other patients.

  • Has a specific process that patients with COVID-19 symptoms follow if they need to be seen inside an office. This allows these patients to immediately be taken into a private exam room, again reducing the chances of other patients being exposed to the virus.

  • Helps all patients avoid the waiting room by calling the office from the parking lot. The patient registration process can be completed over the phone, and a staff member will call you when it is time for you to be seen by a provider.

  • Designates specific rooms for patients who have, or are presumed to have, COVID-19. These rooms utilize specialized air filtration equipment. In addition, each urgent care office has a negative pressure isolation room, which helps contain airborne diseases.

  • Limits guests in its offices and follows Middlesex Health’s visitor policy as it pertains to outpatient facilities and medical offices. You can find Middlesex Health’s current visitor policy here.

  • Requires face masks to be worn by all staff, patients and visitors. Per recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), face masks are still required in health care settings. You must wear a mask while at a Middlesex Health facility regardless of whether you've been vaccinated.

  • Makes hand sanitizer readily available. Patients and visitors are asked to sanitize their hands when they enter a building. All urgent care staff members must also sanitize their hands before and after they meet patients.
