Middlesex Health Paramedic Education Program

In order to be admitted to the program, applicants must:

• Be 18 years of age by the beginning of the program. Proof (i.e. driver’s license, passport, etc.) is required upon acceptance.
• Have graduated high school or obtained a GED by the beginning of the program.
• Have and maintain a current CT EMT certification in good standing.  Certification must remain current for the length of the program.  The program does not recognize the 90-day grace period for recertification awarded by OEMS for recertification.  
• Have and maintain a current BLS (CPR) certification from the American Heart Association.
• Submit proof of completion of NIMS 100, 200, and 700.
• Submit a current resume or curriculum vitae
• Pass a background screening.
• Pass a drug screening. 
• Submit a completed Medical Screening Form documenting good health and up-to-date vaccination status. Evidence of COVID-19 vaccination is required.
• Complete an interview with the faculty.
• Complete entrance examinations for English, mathematics, and EMT knowledge.
• Have and maintain medical insurance for the duration of the program.
• Complete hospital orientation materials by the specified due date.
• Meet the technical requirements of an entry-level paramedic.

The program is broken into four 15-week modules.  The general makeup of the program is listed below.

Module 1

1. Principles of Paramedic Practice I - Didactic and Lab
   • This course will provide students with foundational knowledge and skills requisite to paramedic practice. Topics include EMS history, legal concerns, documentation, assessment, pathophysiology basics, pharmacology basics, and advanced airway management. The student will learn skills including venous access, medication administration, and airway management.
2. Anatomy and Physiology for Paramedics I - Didactic
   • This course will provide students with foundational anatomy and physiology knowledge with a particular emphasis on pathophysiology.  Basics of cellular and tissue structure and function are introduced prior to a system-based approach through the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, and nervous/sensory systems.

Module 2

1. Principles of Paramedic Practice II - Didactic and Lab
   • This course will provide students with an in-depth understanding of cardiology and pulmonology, including advanced cardiac physiology, rhythm interpretation, EKG interpretation, and management of patients with dysrhythmias, cardiac, and respiratory complaints.  ACLS certification is provided in this course. 
2. Anatomy and Physiology for Paramedics II - Didactic
   • This course covers the anatomy and physiology of the endocrine, cardiovascular, lymphatic, immune, respiratory, digestive, urinary, and reproductive systems with a particular focus on pathophysiology.
3. Paramedic Clinical Rotations I 
   • Students will rotate through various clinical rotations within the hospital and the EMS Department. 

Module 3

1. Principles of Paramedic Practice III - Didactic and Lab
   • This course will provide students with an understanding of the treatment of medical emergencies, special populations, and pediatrics. PALS and PHTLS certifications are provided in this course. 
2. Paramedic Clinical Rotations II
   • Students continue various clinical rotations within the hospital and the EMS Department. 

Module 4

1. Applications of Paramedic Practice 
   • Students will attend class one night per week while completing a Capstone Field Internship at Middlesex Health or one of our partnered EMS agencies. 

The all-inclusive cost of the program is $11,500.  This covers the cost of tuition,  all books and materials, lab fees, clinical fees, uniforms, and ACLS, PALS, and PHTLS certification. NREMT testing fees are not included.

A non-refundable $1,500.00 deposit is due at the time of acceptance into the program to reserve a seat.  No seat will be reserved until the deposit is received. 

Definitions

Retention: Retention is defined as the percentage of students who began paramedic coursework that graduated from the program.  Retention is affected by students leaving the program voluntarily (personal, financial, medical reasons) and involuntarily (academic performance, disciplinary reasons).  

NREMT Pass Rate: The percentage of graduates who successfully complete the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians’ testing process and become nationally certified as a paramedic. 

Job Placement: The amount of graduates working or volunteering as a paramedic within six months of graduation
