We understand the importance of skin-to-skin contact between parents and baby - so our priority is keeping you and your newborn together.
Our providers have the expertise to meet all of your needs - and your baby's needs - in the moments after birth. As long as there are no medical needs to address, your baby will “room-in” with you for the rest of your stay. We even bathe and examine your baby right in the room!
We will also continue to provide whatever support you need during your baby's first hours, and in the days and weeks following:
If your baby does need any special medical attention after birth, he or she will receive expert one-on-one care from the highly trained members of our Level II neonatal intensive care nursery. Some babies only need an hour or two in the Special Care Nursery, while others may need to stay longer. If your baby needs to stay longer, you will be able to stay in one of our designated on-site family rooms.
We strongly encourage mom and baby to begin breastfeeding as soon as you are both ready and able. Our staff includes internationally board certified lactation consultants, and all of our nurses are specially trained to work through any difficulties you may experience with breastfeeding.
If necessary, a breast pump is provided to you for free during your hospital stay.
If you will need a breast pump at home, our Lactation Consultant can help you obtain one through your private insurance.
The Pregnancy & Birth Center is also a Medela Symphony Breast Pump rental station. The pump described below is what is available to you at Middlesex and is also available for rental after your stay. Our Nurse Navigator can assist you with the rental process.
