Spine Surgery: Middlesex Leads the Way

Spine Surgery

Middlesex Health recently became the first health system in New England to use Globus Medical's Excelsius3D™ intraoperative imaging device, which benefits patients who need spine surgery.

Back pain is a common golf injury, and it can greatly impact your mobility. You risk seriously injuring your back when you swing your golf club or carry your bag. Sometimes, the injuries can be treated by taking anti-inflammatory medicine, getting steroid injections or visiting a physical therapist or chiropractor. Other times, surgery is needed.

Middlesex Health has four capable spine surgeons, and they are now using the Excelsius3D™ intraoperative imaging device to make spine surgeries, such as spinal fusions, even safer and less invasive for patients.

Middlesex Health began using the state-of-the-art device this summer. This technology is important because it offers superior enhanced imaging. It also combines three imaging modalities (cone-beam CT scan, fluoroscopy and digital radiography) into one piece of equipment, minimizing the equipment needed in the operating room and decreasing the amount of time a patient is in surgery.

In addition, Globus Medical's Excelsius3D™ works in tandem with Globus Medical’s ExcelsiusGPS™, which Middlesex began using in 2018 to view patient anatomy in real time during minimally invasive spine surgeries. Together, the technology is designed to improve the accuracy when placing implants, lower radiation exposure and shorten the length of a surgery.

When to Seek Help

Back injuries can plague even the best golfers. Tiger Woods has hurt his back numerous times!

If you experience any neck or back pain that doesn’t go away, or if you experience any numbness in your arms or legs, you should see a spine surgeon. You may need to get an MRI of your spine to determine the injury and the type of treatment required.
