Cancer

June 2 is National Cancer Survivors Day — a chance to honor those who are living with a history of cancer.

Every day, Middlesex Health provides vital cancer screenings, diagnosis and treatment. It also offers genetic testing to help inform personalized prevention and screening recommendations. Due to the capabilities of Middlesex Health Cancer Center and its providers, many individuals are able to beat cancer and live their lives to the fullest. This allows them to continue to spend time with friends and family and pursue their passions, such as golf!

Middlesex Health recognizes and supports all cancer survivors, regardless of where they received their treatment. It’s not easy to battle cancer, and the health system offers its full support to those navigating life post-cancer diagnosis.

About Middlesex Health Cancer Center

Middlesex Health Cancer Center has two locations — one in Middletown; the other in Westbrook. It takes a personalized approach to cancer care and uses the latest technology to help patients.

Middlesex Health treats a variety of cancers — from breast cancer and gynecological cancers to lung cancer and skin cancers. Nurse navigators, registered nurses who guide patients through their cancer journey, are available to provide education and support. Supportive services, such as social work services and nutritional counseling, are available, along with integrative medicine services made available through The Burris Center for Integrative Medicine.

In addition, through Middlesex Health’s membership in the Mayo Clinic Care Network, patients can receive second opinions from Mayo Clinic experts without leaving Connecticut and at no extra cost.

What else should you know?

One of the keys to beating cancer is early detection. Identifying cancer early can lead to better outcomes.

Because of this, it is important that you consult with your medical provider and get any recommended cancer screenings as appropriate. For example, regular colonoscopies are recommended beginning at age 45 as a way to screen for colorectal cancer, annual mammograms are recommended for those 40 and older as a way to screen for breast cancer, and cervical cancer screens are recommended beginning at age 21. In addition, annual lung cancer screenings are recommended beginning at age 50 for those with a qualifying smoking history. Knowledge is power!
