A buildup of acid in the body, which can lead to various health conditions without treatment.

Self-care

Diet changes may help lower acid levels. Eat more fruit, vegetables and plant-based protein such as beans and nuts. Eat less animal-based protein such as meat, cheese and eggs.

When to seek immediate medical care

See a healthcare professional right away for:

  • Confusion with or without headache.
  • Fast heartbeat.
  • Long, deep breaths.
  • Less or no urination.

When to make a doctor's appointment

See a healthcare professional for:

  • Tiredness or weakness.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Upset stomach or vomiting.
  • Urine that looks foamy, frothy or bubbly.
  • Urinating more often than usual.
  • Muscle cramps in the evening.
