Agoraphobia

Description

Fear of places and situations that might cause panic and feelings of being trapped or helpless. It may include fear of crowds or open or enclosed spaces.

Overview

Agoraphobia is an anxiety disorder. The anxiety is caused by fear that there is no easy way to escape or get help if the anxiety gets out of control.

Symptoms

It involves fear and avoidance of places and situations that might cause panic and feelings of being trapped, helpless or embarrassed. Symptoms includes fear of leaving home alone, crowds or waiting in line, enclosed or open spaces, or using public transportation. Agoraphobia often develops after one or more panic attacks.

Treatments

Treatment includes talk therapy and medicine.
