Self-care options include stretching and massaging the muscle to help it relax. Applying heat or cold also may help.

When to make a doctor's appointment

See a doctor if:

  • Severe discomfort
  • Swelling, redness, or skin changes
  • Muscle weakness
  • Frequent
  • Not associated with an obvious cause
