De Quervain syndrome

Overview

De Quervain (dih-kwer-VAIN) syndrome is a painful condition affecting the tendons on the thumb side of the wrist. Repetitive hand or wrist movements can make the condition worse.

Symptoms

Symptoms include pain and swelling near the base of the thumb, difficulty moving the thumb and wrist, and a "sticking" or "stop-and-go" sensation in the thumb when moving it.

Treatments

Treatment may include pain relief medicines, physical or occupational therapy, or surgery. Treatment is generally successful when started early.
