Diverticulitis is an inflammation or infection in 1 or more small pouches (diverticula) in the digestive tract. It's common after age 40.
Symptoms include abdominal pain, fever, nausea, and a change in bowel habits.
Treatment can include rest, a liquid or low-fiber diet, and antibiotics. Severe cases may need hospital care and surgery.
