Dysentery

Description

An infection of the intestines that causes bloody diarrhea.

Overview

Dysentery is most often caused by shigella germ or an amoeba. Dysentery passes easily from person to person. It often is spread through food or water that is not clean.

Symptoms

Dysentery causes bloody diarrhea. It also can cause stomach pain and fever.

Treatment

Most people get better without medicine in 5 to 7 days. People with mild symptoms might need only to rest and drink plenty of fluids. People with severe symptoms might need medicines called antibiotics.
