Self-care

Chew your food thoroughly, eat smaller meals, and try foods with different textures. Avoid caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, and any foods that may be hard to swallow.

When to seek immediate medical care

See a doctor immediately if:

  • Trouble breathing
  • Lasting feeling that food is stuck in throat
  • Can't swallow anything

When to make a doctor's appointment

Make an appointment to see a doctor if:

  • Lasts more than few days
  • Unintentional weight loss
  • Vomiting
