Self-care

Self-care options include a warm, moist cloth on the ear and pain medicines available without a prescription. Be sure to take only as directed. Don't give aspirin to children.

When to seek immediate medical care

See a health care provider immediately for:

  • Discharge of fluid, pus or blood from ear.
  • Severe pain.

When to make a doctor's appointment

Make an appointment to see a health care provider for:

  • Fever.
  • Symptoms that last more than one day.
  • Child that's irritable and restless.
  • Hearing that gets worse over time.
