Reduce dietary salt, particularly the sodium found in packaged foods. Exercise, massage, and keeping the area elevated when at rest also can help drain fluid.

See a doctor immediately if:

  • Sudden
  • Severe
  • Chest pain or shortness of breath
  • Pain or redness in leg, especially after long periods of sitting still

When to make a doctor's appointment

Make an appointment to see a doctor if:

  • Shiny or stretched skin
  • Skin that keeps dimple shape after being pressed
  • Discomfort
  • Persistent
