If the cause is known, avoid harsh or perfumed soaps, detergents, or lotions, and known allergy triggers. An over-the-counter antihistamine or steroid cream may help.

  • Sudden or for no apparent reason
  • Spreads quickly or covers most of the body
  • Fever

When to make a doctor's appointment

Make an appointment to see a doctor if:

  • Persistent
  • Painful
  • Oozes yellow or green fluid
  • Blisters
