Self-care

Rest painful foot as much as possible. Avoid activities that worsen pain. Ice the area for up to 20 minutes several times daily. Over-the-counter pain relievers may help.

When to seek immediate medical care

See a doctor immediately if:

  • Open wound or obvious deformity
  • Severe pain or swelling
  • Foot can't bear any weight
  • Signs of infection, such as redness or fever
  • Wound isn't healing

When to make a doctor's appointment

Make an appointment to see a doctor if:

  • Swelling doesn't improve in two to five days
  • Pain persists or worsens
  • Limits ability to work or do daily tasks
  • Numbness, burning, or tingling
