Harlequin-type ichthyosis

Overview

Harlequin ichthyosis is a condition in which a newborn has hard, thick skin in diamond patterns.

The condition prevents skin from properly protecting the body.

Symptoms

Affected newborns are prone to dehydration and infections.

Treatments

Hospitalization is required. Medications and IV fluids can help. Tube feeding may be needed.
