Heart valve disease

Description

A condition in which one or more heart valves do not work properly.

Overview

Heart valve disease is a condition in which a heart valve doesn't work as usual.

There are different types of heart valve disease. Stenosis is when the valve becomes narrow and doesn't open properly. Regurgitation is when the valve flaps don't close properly and blood leaks backward.

Symptoms

Symptoms of heart valve disease may include chest pain, dizziness, irregular heartbeats and fatigue. There may be shortness of breath at rest or when active or lying down. Some people don't notice symptoms for many years.

Treatments

Medicines and lifestyle changes may be recommended. Surgery to repair or replace the heart valve may be needed.
