For known hemorrhoids, increased fiber, stool softeners, and more fluids will help make bowel movements easier to pass.

When to seek immediate medical care

See a doctor immediately if:

  • Fainting
  • Pale skin
  • Sweating
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Shortness of breath
  • Abdominal pain

When to make a doctor's appointment

Make an appointment to see a doctor if:

  • Occurs repeatedly
  • Other changes in stool frequency or consistency
  • Unintentional weight loss, night sweats, or fever
  • Diarrhea just before or after passage of blood
  • Fatigue
