When one or more joints can move through a wider range of motion than usual.

Self-care

In case of pain, start an exercise program approved by a healthcare professional. Use ice, heat, acetaminophen (Tylenol), NSAIDs such as naproxen sodium (Aleve) or a brace.

When to seek immediate medical care

See a healthcare professional right away if a joint:

  • Is stuck out of its usual place, also called dislocated.
  • Hurts badly.

When to make a doctor's appointment

See a healthcare professional if a joint:

  • Is painful or stiff.
  • Is swollen.
  • Seems to be injured.
