Leprosy

Overview

Leprosy is a chronic, curable disease caused by infection with the bacterium Mycobacterium leprae. It mainly affects the skin and peripheral nerves.

Symptoms

Symptoms include pale or red skin lesions, reduced sensation, numbness, or tender, enlarged nerves.

Treatments

Early treatment avoids disability. Treatment is mainly antibiotics.
