Self-care

Over-the-counter pain medications can help reduce pain. Elevating the leg and applying ice may relieve swelling. A cane or walker can aid walking.

When to seek immediate medical care

See a doctor immediately if:

  • Injury with a deep cut or exposed bone or tendon
  • Unable to walk or put weight on leg
  • Pain, swelling, redness, or warmth in calf
  • Popping or grinding sound at time of leg injury

When to make a doctor's appointment

Make an appointment to see a doctor if:

  • Pain during or after walking
  • Swelling in both legs
  • Symptoms don't improve after a few days of home treatment
  • Painful varicose veins
  • New weakness
