Self-care

Self-care may include taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others).

When to seek immediate medical care

See a doctor immediately if:

  • Soaking through more than one pad or tampon an hour over several hours
  • Accompanied by fatigue, shortness of breath

When to make a doctor's appointment

Make an appointment to see a doctor if:

  • Bleeding longer than a week or in between periods
  • Menstrual flow heavier than usual
  • Passing blood clots on more than one day of period
  • Having to double-up on pads to prevent soaking through
  • Affecting daily activities
  • Any bleeding after menopause
