Self-care options include rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE). Over-the-counter acetaminophen (Tylenol) and ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others) can help, too.

See a doctor immediately if:

  • Trouble breathing or dizziness
  • Extreme muscle weakness
  • High fever and stiff neck

When to make a doctor's appointment

Make an appointment to see a doctor if:

  • Worsens with exercise and resolves with rest, especially in the calves
  • Redness and swelling
  • Follows a change in medication or dosage
