Mycosis

Description

Any disease that is caused by a fungus.

Overview

Mycosis is the medical term for a fungal disease. Fungi can cause conditions such as asthma or allergies, skin and nail infections, rashes, pneumonia, and bloodstream infections. Anyone can get mycosis. But it's more common in people with weakened immune systems.

Symptoms

Mycosis symptoms depend on the type of fungal disease that a person has. Common fungal conditions tend to affect the skin, nails, vagina, mouth and throat. Serious fungal diseases that are more common among people with weakened immune systems may affect the blood, heart, brain, eyes, bones or lungs.

Treatment

Mycosis treatment depends on the type of fungal disease that a person has. Some fungal conditions can be treated with medicines called antifungals that kill or stop the growth of fungi in the body. But few antifungal medicines are available. And some fungal infections can resist the effects of these medicines.
