Reye's syndrome

Children recovering from a viral infection such as chickenpox or flu, especially if using aspirin, or who have a metabolic disorder are most at risk.

Early symptoms include diarrhea, rapid breathing, vomiting, and lethargy. Symptoms such as confusion, seizures, and loss of consciousness need emergency treatment.

Treatment includes IV fluids, diuretics, and medication to prevent bleeding.
