Spondyloarthropathy

Description

A group of conditions in which arthritis affects the spine, joints of the pelvis, shoulders or hips.

Overview

Spondyloarthropathy involves painful swelling called inflammation. The swelling occurs in sites where a ligament or tendon attaches to bone. It often affects young adults. Its exact cause is not clear.

Symptoms

The main symptom of spondyloarthropathy is low back pain. The pain may get better during activity and become worse at rest. Stiffness may be worse in the morning and improve over the course of the day.

Treatments

Spondyloarthropathy treatment includes medicines that can ease symptoms, control inflammation and prevent more joint damage. Exercise and physical therapy also can help the spine stay healthy and mobile.
