Self-care options include massage, compression, moving and using the muscles in the affected area, and elevating the swollen area above the heart. Reducing salt intake may help.
When to seek immediate medical care
See a doctor immediately if:
- Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
- Chest pain
- Swelling or pain in one limb
- Rapid weight gain
When to make a doctor's appointment
Make an appointment to see a doctor if:
- Stretched or shiny skin
- Skin that retains a dimple after being pressed
- New swelling that doesn't go away
