Self-care

Self-care includes drinking plenty of water and eating fruits and vegetables. Take in more fluids when exercising, ill, or in a hot environment to avoid dehydration.

When to seek immediate medical care

See a doctor immediately if:

  • Extreme thirst
  • Lack of urination
  • Shriveled skin
  • Dizziness
  • Confusion

When to make a doctor's appointment

Make an appointment to see a doctor if:

  • Moderate diarrhea for 24 hours or more
  • Can't keep down fluids
  • Sleepier or less active than usual
  • Excess urination with excess thirst
  • Weight loss
