Vaginitis

Description

An inflammation of the vagina that can result in discharge, itching and pain.

Overview

A change in the balance of vaginal bacteria, an infection or reduced estrogen levels after menopause can result in vaginitis. Bacteria, fungus and parasites are the most common causes. Vaginitis can be sexually transmitted.

Symptoms

Symptoms include a change in color, amount or odor of discharge from the vagina. Other symptoms can be itching or irritation, painful urination and pain during intercourse.

Treatment

Treatment depends on the cause. Treatment most often involves medicines.
