Varicose veins

Description

Twisted, swollen veins, most commonly appearing in the legs and feet.

Overview

Varicose veins are twisted, swollen veins. They occur most commonly in the legs and feet. The veins can look like cords on the legs. They may be a sign of a problem with the blood vessels.

Symptoms

For many people, varicose veins are simply a cosmetic concern. Varicose veins might not cause pain. But symptoms can include aching pain and discomfort. The veins may look dark purple, blue or the same color as the skin. Depending on skin color, the changes may be harder or easier to see.

Treatments

Treatment involves exercising, raising legs when sitting or lying down, or wearing compression stockings. A procedure may be done to close or remove veins.
