Use pain relievers available without a prescription, such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others) or acetaminophen (Tylenol, others). Rest, ice and using a wrist support may help.

When to seek immediate medical care

See a health care professional immediately if there is:

  • An injury.
  • Swelling.
  • Serious pain.
  • Reduced movement or altered sensation.
  • Deformity.

When to make a doctor's appointment

Make an appointment to see a health care professional if:

  • Persistent pain and swelling.
  • Unexplained pain.
  • Affects daily activity.
