Self-care

To keep the mouth moist, sip water or other sugar-free fluids often, chew sugar-free gum, and try over-the-counter artificial saliva products. A room humidifier also may help.

When to seek immediate medical care

See a doctor immediately if:

  • Develops suddenly
  • Other symptoms that could indicate illness, such as frequent urination or infections

When to make a doctor's appointment

Make an appointment to see a doctor if:

  • Persistent
  • Trouble chewing, speaking, or swallowing
  • Difficulty wearing dentures
  • Excessive tooth decay
