Sacral Nerve Stimulation (Neuromodulation)

Middlesex Health is now offering a procedure for fecal incontinence (also known as accidental bowel leakage) called sacral nerve stimulation or sacral neuromodulation.
Sacral nerve stimulation therapy uses a small device that is implanted under the skin in the upper buttock area. The device sends mild electrical impulses to the nerves that control the bowels, restoring normal communication with the brain, which can result in improvement of bowel leakage.
If you have fecal incontinence, the use of a sacral nerve stimulator may improve your ability to maintain bowel control, decrease the number of episodes of leakage or incontinence, and improve your quality of life.
